About Byron Powdrell

Byron Powdrell is a community leader, small business owner, and candidate for County Commissioner, District 5—running to represent people, not politics. His campaign is focused on practical solutions, accountability, and steady leadership that delivers real results for the community.

As part of the family behind Powdrell Barbecue, founded by Pete and Willie Powdrell, Byron comes from a trusted local business that has served the community for generations. He is also a proud father of three daughters, one son, and a grandfather of two grandsons. Byron understands what it means to work hard, and serve a community every day. That experience drives his commitment to supporting small businesses, protecting local jobs, and ensuring county government works effectively for the people it serves.

District 5 is one district with two distinct communities—the East Mountains and Albuquerque—each with its own priorities and challenges.

In the East Mountains, residents have made it clear what’s not working: inconsistent road maintenance, slow emergency response times, wildfire risk, limited infrastructure, zoning concerns, water availability, and a sense of being overlooked. These communities value their rural character and independence, but they also expect reliable services, stronger communication, and responsible growth that keeps pace with infrastructure—not development that outpaces roads, water systems, and emergency services.

In Albuquerque’s District 5 areas, residents are focused on public safety, homelessness, housing affordability, and economic opportunity. They want safer neighborhoods, responsible growth, and leadership that can cut through bureaucracy to deliver meaningful improvements.

Byron Powdrell believes these concerns are not competing—they are equally important and deserve equal attention. The challenges facing District 5 don’t stop at the end of the workday, and neither should the commitment to solving them. The problems of this district are not part-time, and your representation shouldn’t be either.

His approach centers on common-sense problem solving—prioritizing essential services, using taxpayer dollars responsibly, and making decisions based on what works.

Byron offers straightforward leadership, honest communication, and a clear commitment to getting things done. His goal is to bring balance, accountability, and results to the County Commission—because District 5 deserves leadership that listens, acts, and delivers.

I’ve spent my life in broadcasting, and every year I attend the National Association of Broadcasters convention to stay ahead of emerging technology. I started in radio in the early 1980s at KANW, then moved into commercial radio, and in 2014 founded Future Broadcasters’ 99.9 The Beat.

What I’ve learned is simple: the limits we accept are often outdated.

A typical low-power FM station reaches maybe 2–5 miles. By rethinking transmitter design, antenna systems, tower placement, and adding redundant power, I pushed 99.9 far beyond that. With modern modeling software that accounts for terrain, we extended coverage across most of the city and into the East Mountains, reaching areas like Carnuel all at just 100 watts. That’s a fraction of what traditional stations use, yet it works.

This isn’t just about radio—it’s about infrastructure.

The same principles can strengthen our emergency communications. Right now, first responders—fire, EMS, and law enforcement—still deal with dead zones and unreliable signals. That’s unacceptable. We have the tools to design smarter systems: better coverage mapping, strategically placed transmitters, and resilient power backups that keep communication running when it matters most.

District 5 needs solutions grounded in reality, not assumptions. The East Mountains aren’t Albuquerque they face different terrain, different risks, and different infrastructure challenges. A one-size-fits-all system doesn’t work there.

By applying proven broadcast engineering methods, we can build a communications network that eliminates coverage gaps, improves response times, and makes people safer whether they’re in the city or in the East Mountains.

This is just one of many practical, forward-looking ideas I’m bringing to the table—focused on reliability, safety, and using innovation to serve everyone.
