About Byron

Byron Powdrell is a life-long resident of Albuquerque and has resided in District 9 for almost 30 years. His family moved here in 1950 and started Powdrell's Barbecue in the late 60's. Mr. Powdrell's values and interest in community involvement came from his late father Willie Powdrell and grandfather Pete Powdrell, and today he continues that family tradition of community involvement.

No stranger to “giving back,” Mr. Powdrell has served as Policy Council Chair with the City of Albuquerque's Head Start Policy Council. He is also a past member of the City of Albuquerque's Cultural Services Urban Enhancement Trust Fund Committee. Convinced that he could do more, Byron developed Future Broadcasters Inc. (the parent company for non-profit, low-power radio station 99.9 The Beat ,a community radio station) with a focus on the community and its issues. At no cost, he brings local business and organizations on his platform to talk about their goods, services, and issues that affect the citizens.

In his efforts to help improve education, economic development, and jobs, Mr. Powdrell is working on a tuition-free charter school. This has a unique and specific focus on both Radio and Television broadcasting. This school will be the first of its kind in the nation.

As a City Councilman, Mr. Powdrell will take an active, hands-on role in the community by attending H.O.A. meetings, visiting business owners, and conducting district meetings to stay in touch with the Community.

Mr. Powdrell will bring a multi-pronged approach to improving economic development in the District tackling Public Safety issues, Early Education and will move to bring more transparency and accountability in City Hall--to prevent projects like A.R.T. from becoming a surprise to the people of Albuquerque. This resulted in multiple legal actions, causing money to be spent which should have otherwise been used to help improve the community.
